What to expect

From population to person...

The purpose of nutrition counseling is to evaluate and educate you according to your individual needs. Your needs might be in line with general public health messages or you may have more specific needs that actually sound a little foreign.

To fully understand this, it usually takes more than one meeting. Most insurance plans cover 6 sessions with a registered dietitian for an office co-pay of $15-40. Our first meeting will be an hour long and we will review your medical history, food and weight history, and how you make decisions around food.

I might have you keep a food journal at some point (although not everyone does or is asked to). We will review what you have eaten in the previous 24 hours and whether or not that is usual. We may create a “meal plan” or decide to focus on broader decision making skills or education. I encourage you to commit to at least 4-6 meetings so we can establish goals, work on behavior change, and get to know each other. (Insurance usually authorizes up to 6 visits with more as needed.)

Many people choose to continue beyond the initial meetings to assist with behavior change and continue to work on translating skills to new situations. Meetings can be weekly or biweekly. If you only intend to come in and see what nutrition counseling is all about and don’t want to commit to more meetings, that is fine too.

We may also decide to work together outside the office or via technology to do a pantry clean out, a cooking activity, or a grocery shopping trip.
